CHS 1962 50th Reunion A Huge Success!Narrowly Misses Superstorm Hurricane Sandy
For the past year, the Conestoga High School Class of 1962 50th Reunion Committee held a series of monthly meetings that were open to all members of the class. The attendees at these meetings were busy at work strategizing and creating one of the best CHS reunions ever. Many great ideas were generated, developed, and carried out to the letter. The regular monthly meetings were held since November 2011 at the Royer- Greaves School for the Blind in Paoli. Twenty to twenty-five core classmates diligently worked to create a major success for the weekend of October 26-28, 2012. Everything went extremely well from beginning to end, except for one overlooked detail – the weather. No one considered it and assumed that, in October of most any year, there should be no problem. Well, almost. In 2012, no one thought that one of the most destructive natural disasters ever to hit the northeast US would ever occur. As lady luck would have it, the CHS 1962 50th Reunion was held, successfully dodging a speeding bullet just 24 hours before Superstorm Hurricane Sandy slammed the east coast. Record amounts of widespread damage and destruction were recorded in New Jersey and New York on Monday and Tuesday of the following week. High winds and driving rains hit Pennsylvania, but causing no real severe damage except for power outages. “We were really lucky that everything worked out timing-wise for us as much as it did,” said John Beatty, a member of the class. “We didn’t think the weather would even be a factor,” he further noted.
With Sandy rapidly advancing toward the region, the weekend began at 7pm with a beer bash Friday night at McKenzie’s Brew House in Malvern. About 100 people attended and enjoyed refreshments while renewing old acquaintances. On Saturday night, 169 people gathered at the Wyndham Garden Hotel at 5:30pm in Exton for class photos, cocktails, a tasty buffet banquet dinner, a high-tech Skype interview with classmate Dr. Gib Henderson in St. Louis, digital music of the ‘50s and ‘60s, light entertainment, special presentations and awards, oldies dancing until 11pm, followed by adjournment to the hospitality suite. On Sunday, a buffet brunch was provided from 8am-11am. About 50 people attended to bid their classmates and friends a fond farewell until the next time they meet. Sally Brenner Hammerman, another committee member said that “The reunion truly was an energizing event - physically, and emotionally. And I only attended Conestoga for the high school years - wonderful years, really educational, and inspiring!”
Classmates came from many distant corners of the country to attend the event. These places included New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Arizona, and California. One classmate, Bethe Roberts, traveled globally all the way from Brazil to visit friends, family, and attend her life’s milestone high school occasion.
Sherry Byassee Collins, Committee Treasurer, reported that a surplus was made from reunion reservations and donations that would go toward providing Conestoga High School with a class gift. The specific gift amount or actual type of gift had not been determined at the time of this writing.
Many of the attendees expressed an interest in having another reunion in five years, and this possibility will be considered at the next meeting on December 5. Those of you who were not able to make it this year, mark your calendars now for 2017 for our 55th Reunion or join us for our December 5 meeting at 6pm! Details will be posted on the web site www.conestoga62.myevent.com. Stay in touch with classmates and coming events by keeping your personal information up to date!
