• Dear Parents/Guardians,

I am pleased to share the following information regarding the T/E School District’s 1:1 Technology Initiative, which will provide all students the opportunity to use a District device during the 2020-2021 school year.

    Using a District Device
We are developing electronic training resources to support students and families with the use of their device, similar to topics that would typically be addressed during an in-person orientation. The expectations and rules pertaining to the use of a District-provided device are outlined in the following documents:

While we typically require signed copies of the Agreement for Laptop Use and Acceptable Use Agreement prior to receiving a device, we are changing our practice to limit the exchange of paper and facilitate social distancing. This year, by picking up a device, you are acknowledging the terms outlined in the Agreement for Laptop Use and Acceptable Use Agreement.

    Grade-Specific Information
Grades K-4: Students will receive an iPad and case. All distribution will take place at your child’s elementary school. Please see the distribution timeline for information about when to pick up your child’s device. All District iPads use an Apple lightning cable and standard USB power adapter for charging. We understand that families may already have access to a lightning cable and USB power adapter from other iPads or iPhones in their home. The cost to the District to replace the lightning charging cable and USB power adapter is $50. With this in mind, our default will be to not provide a charging cable or USB power adapter. We will have charging cables and power adapters available for families who request one, with the understanding that they will be responsible for the full $50 cost of replacement if the cable and/or USB power adapter are not returned.

Grade 5: Students will receive a Dell laptop. Our plan calls for fifth graders to receive new laptops, however due to global supply chain issues beyond our control, these laptops are not scheduled to arrive until October. We will still supply each student with a laptop prior to the first day of school using temporarily repurposed laptops from our elementary schools. Once the new laptops arrive, we will develop a plan to switch the repurposed devices with the new laptops. Please see the distribution timeline for information about when to pick up your temporary device.

Grade 6: Students will receive a Dell laptop. Please see the distribution timeline for information about when to pick up your device.

Grade 7: Students will receive a Dell laptop. Please see the distribution timeline for information about when to pick up your device.

Grade 8: Students will receive a Dell laptop. Any students who attended TEMS or VFMS last year will use their same laptop again. We strongly recommend that students return their laptop to us to be reimaged (reset to factory settings) prior to the start of the school year. Please see the distribution timeline for information about when to drop off and pick up your device.

    Conestoga High School
High school students have the option of using their own device or using a District-provided laptop. If any students are in possession of a District-provided device but plan to use their own personal device this year, please return your laptop and charger during the designated drop-off time. As we work to provide devices to more than 7,000 students, we need access to as many devices as possible. Laptop drop-off and pick-up times will be coordinated with other drop-off/pick-up days at CHS (e.g. textbooks), and the Conestoga High School administration will be sharing specifics about dates and times in a separate communication.

    Grade 9:

    • District-Provided Laptop – Students will receive a Dell laptop. Anyone who attended TEMS or VFMS last year will use their same laptop again. As part of the transition of network accounts from middle school to high school, students will be required to return their laptop to us to be reimaged (reset to factory settings) prior to the start of the school year. Ninth grade laptops will not work after Wednesday, August 19 – they must be returned to be reimaged. Please see the distribution timeline for information about when to drop off and pick up your device.

    Grades 10-12:

    • District-Provided Laptop – Students will receive a Dell laptop. Anyone who attended Conestoga last year will use their same laptop again. We strongly recommend that students return their laptop to us to be reimaged (reset to factory settings) prior to the start of the school year. Please see the timeline for additional information. Please see the distribution timeline for information about when to drop off and pick up your device.

    Family Cost-Sharing Fee
Families of students in grades 5-12 are asked to pay an annual cost-sharing fee of $50 per student, with a maximum annual family fee (grades 5-12) of $100. This fee covers the manufacturer’s extended warranty and Accidental Damage Protection, as well as a case and set-up/maintenance of the device. The fee can be paid online in advance (information is available on the District website) or by check when the laptop is picked up, however we prefer the use of online payment to limit the amount of contact between families and District staff. There is no fee for the use of elementary iPads. Please contact your child’s counselor or administrator prior to your child picking up their laptop if the cost-sharing fee poses a financial hardship for your family.

Please feel free to contact FamilyHelpDesk@tesd.net with any questions regarding the 1:1 Technology Initiative.  We are excited to offer this opportunity to our students as part of our continuing efforts to support innovative teaching and learning in the T/E School District.

    Sincerely,

    Michael Szymendera, Ed.D.
