Science
Eighth grade science classes will start the year with a review of the Metric System of Measure, measuring techniques, the scientific method, common lab equipment and safety, expressing numerical values in standard and scientific notation, and utilizing dimensional analysis for performing conversions between systems of measure. Emphasis will be on science skills of observation, inference, experimentation, and creating data tables and graphs with clearly identified independent and dependent variables. Students will begin the first unit of study with their first textbook, Weather and Climate, within the next week or two. Topics will include Earths atmospheric composition, air pressure, and layers of the atmosphere. Extensive graphing and modeling will be used by the students to help convey the topics in this text.
Math
Pre-Algebra - The year commences in all pre-algebra classes with a unit on exponents and rules for exponents. Students may use a calculator throughout the year in this course. Please see their course syllabus for suggested calculator (but any will do).
Algebra- Students will begin the year with a unit on solving linear equations and inequalities. They will then learn how to apply them to word problems.
Algebra 2 Students are studying equations and inequalities in one variable. More complex expressions are covered including absolute value and double absolute value.
Geometry Students are beginning with a study of basic concepts (point, line, and plane) as well as some important theorems to be applied throughout the course. Deductive reasoning is the next unit of study.
Math Analysis Math Analysis BC students are jumping right into functions and their properties. We will take apart Piecewise functions, transform graphs, find angles between lines, learn about the Parent functions, and compose functions and find their inverses. Students will also have fun graphing with DESMOS.
Study Skills
8thgrade Reading/ Study Skillswill providestudentswithanintegrated educational experiencewithin theLanguageArtsskillsof reading, writing, listening, viewing, speaking, and thinking througha variety of text. The students will begin the year with an exploration of organization strategies, critical thinking skills, test-taking and note-taking practices, digital literacy, and self-advocacy.
