English
In English classes students participate in an activity in which they can say "I object" with their teachers' approval! As a culminating exercise to the Of Mice and Men unit, each class is separated into two legal teams; the prosecution and defense teams compete against the opposition teams from other classes. Each team is responsible for preparing testimony for witnesses, presenting opening and closing arguments, conducting cross- examinations of opposition witnesses, and serving as a jury to render a verdict. The novel is the only source of information for all testimony admitted into court and all participants must adhere to legal proceedings determined by Judges Baker, McCarthy, and Ferenchick. Following the trials, students will begin a unit on Greek mythology.
Social Studies
In American Studies II, students are continuing their study of the three branches of the United States government. Next we will review the 27 amendments. We will conclude our Civics unit with students debating famous Supreme Court cases.
Science
November will see some lab work on weather and climate topics including studying dew point. November for many students will see the end of their study in the weather and climate textbook.
Students will also begin researching topic for their science research project which will be due in early April. Background research on topics should begin in November.
Math:
Pre-Algebra
Students have just finished working on a unit involving solving multi-step equations. They have done a great job with these complex problems. We are now moving into a unit on Writing and Graphing Equations of a Line. Pre-Algebra students are using a textbook which offers an online version of the book as well as many resources to help prepare them for test and quizzes. You can check it out at my.hrw.com. There are instructions on your teachers webpage about how to login (username and password).
Algebra 1
Classes are finishing a unit on the Graphing Applications and Writing an Equation of a Line. Our next unit will be Solving Systems of Linear Equations.
Geometry
Geometry students will be completing their study of congruent triangles with an emphasis on proofs. The next unit deals with relationships in triangles. Students will study midsegments, bisectors, concurrent lines. They will then learn to write indirect proofs.
Algebra 2
Algebra 2 students have completed the unit on Matrices, and will now move on to the study of functions. Topics to be covered include: relations/functions, domain/range, piecewise functions, graphing and transformations, function operations, compositions and inverse functions.
Math Analysis
Students have finished unit two and are moving on to a review of Law of Cosines and Sines. They will also learn about vectors and applications of vectors, complex numbers, DeMoivres Theorem, and finding roots.
Study Skills
Students will finish their exploration of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men with a personal written reflection about courage, challenges, and the American Dream. They will continue their study of vocabulary, parts of speech, writing mechanics, time management, and digital literacy. Students will learn how to write a business letter and will send a letter of gratitude to someone in their lives. Additionally, students will prepare to read and analyze Greek mythology.
