English
Students will continue their work with poetry analysis and composition, as well as analyzing reactions to Warriors Dont Cry, an autobiographical account of the integration of Little Rocks Central High School. Following the completion of that unit, we will begin our study of Holocaust literature. Students will be researching the historical context of the novels they will be reading and will be engaging in literature circles for book discussions and related activities. Journal entries, vocabulary study, and selected grammar lessons are ongoing.
American History
In February, students will analyze the ways in which new machines changed American society, encouraged the expansion of slavery, and contributed to both nationalism and sectionalism in the first half in the 1800s. Students will continue to research stocks and play the National Stock Market Game every Friday.
Science
During February the science teachers will be taking the students on an exploration of energy. First the students will learn more about types of energy and law of conservation of energy. Next, we will study the energy of heat, during a basic discussion of thermodynamics. Activities will include conservation of energy and heat transfer.
Math:
Pre-Algebra
Students are now working in the second book of the Math in Focus Course 3. They are currently working on Chapter 7, learning about Radicals, the Pythagorean Theorem and the Distance Formula. They will also work in Chapter 8 on Geometric Transformations.
Algebra
Students are learning about Quadratic Equations. They are graphing and solving quadratic equations. They will also be learning Factoring this month.
Geometry
The focus in geometry is starting to change. Although the two-column proof will still be utilized, the emphasis of the course shifts to applications. Algebra skills will be applied more frequently. The current unit is a study of right triangles including an introduction to trigonometry. Applications using angles of elevation/depression will be explored. Our next unit, Area, continues to utilize trigonometry in calculating the areas of plane figures.
Algebra 2
Students are completing the unit on rational functions. This will be followed by exponential functions and logarithms. Applications in science and finance will be explored.
Study Skills 8
Eighth grade students will complete the nonfiction unit called A Fight for Rights. Next, students will review the vocabulary and steps related to writing an effective argument. Finally, students will demonstrate an understanding of civil rights and argument writing by using text evidence to publish a newspaper article that presents an argument to their audience to pass the 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote. Vocabulary study, daily grammar review, and biweekly PSSA practice will continue throughout the month.
